(ASX: ARU) Arafura Rare Earths Financial Review - FY2022~26

Arafura’s five-year financial record reflects the cost of advancing Nolans toward construction and the funding required to do so. FY2026 radically increased the cash and financial-asset base, but its large investing outflow was mainly a term-deposit transfer—not an equivalent amount spent building the mine.

Five years in context

The early years funded engineering, front-end design and site enabling works, much of which was expensed rather than added to the exploration balance. The higher losses therefore cannot be read simply as worsening operating-mine margins: Nolans remained a development project.

Funding progressed through offtake agreements, conditional debt approvals and cornerstone equity commitments. The FY2026 report dates the board’s investment decision to May, while continuing to describe financial-close conditions and construction mobilisation separately from production.

Events behind the numbers

FY2022

FEED starts and customer discussions advance

Front-end engineering began in August 2021. The Hyundai memorandum set a framework for future offtake, not realised product sales.

FY2023

Early works and binding offtakes

The company completed FEED, commenced detailed design and enabling works, and signed binding Hyundai/Kia and Siemens Gamesa arrangements. Equity raising supported the programme.

FY2024

Early works finish; site activity scales back

Early works completion was followed by lower site activity while financing progressed. Final conditional debt approvals announced in July 2024 were after the June balance date.

FY2025

Debt commitments and NRFC cornerstone

Conditional senior debt commitments and a binding NRFC investment commitment advanced the funding plan. The later A$80m placement announcement was a subsequent event.

FY2026

Equity funding and investment decision

Hatch was appointed EPCM contractor in October 2025. The board took FID on 21 May 2026 and prepared for construction mobilisation; full operating production was not reported.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 01

Cash recovered through financing, not mine sales

FY2026 financing transformed the balance sheet. Operating cash remained negative, while a large portion of funding was placed in term deposits. Cash equivalents and the separately classified current financial assets must remain distinct.

FY2026 investing includes A$500.086m placed in term deposits; it must not be read as A$509.663m of mine construction spending.

FY2025 uses the later cash-flow comparative, which differs by A$1 in transaction costs and financing total from the earlier edition.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 02

The investing outflow is mostly a treasury movement

Removing the term-deposit placement from investing cash leaves approximately A$9.578m of other investing payments. This transparent calculation helps distinguish treasury allocation from exploration, PPE and security-deposit spending; it is not a new issuer-defined performance measure.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 03

Expense recognition makes the loss series company-specific

Nolans FEED, detailed design, engineering and early works are treated as development activities outside the capitalised exploration scope. The FY2026 disclosure says development costs remain expensed until the bulk-earthworks contract is awarded. That accounting boundary is retained rather than forcing all project spending into one capex series.

Negative amounts are expenses or payments as labelled. Do not add project expense to project cash and call the sum total spending.

FEED, design and early-development costs were expensed; the capitalised exploration balance excludes those activities. Payment timing and accruals explain differences between expense and cash.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 04

Equity increased; the project is still not a producing asset

The expansion of total assets and equity is principally read alongside the cash raise and treasury assets, not as realised value from rare-earth production. The deferred exploration balance remains a separate book-cost measure.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 05

Commitments are not interchangeable with drawdowns

Conditional project debt includes financing and completion-support facilities. Required equity, final documentation and other conditions can still affect drawdown. The reported absence of significant long-term borrowings does not convert conditional limits into cash.

The July 2026 settlement and share-purchase-plan amounts are subsequent events. They are not added to June cash or counted again in the FY2026 share-proceeds line.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 06

Grant and share-based accounting need their own context

The historical MMI grant cessation is mentioned in more than one extracted annual narrative. This report does not count the same A$15m as new income in both years or as new cash. It retains the extracted statutory total earnings without inventing a grant-adjusted measure.

FY2026 also includes A$7.999m of share-based expense versus A$1.051m in the comparative. Those awards affect earnings and equity but are not cash project payments.

Reading the figures

  • Frozen annual extraction only. No original reports, new database queries, financial web research or MiniMax drafting. Published primary-author review.
  • The packet’s latest five periods are FY2022-FY2026. Dates and figures are not relabelled to force a FY2021-FY2025 template.
  • FY2026 row metadata omits currency in several places. Presentation uses the Australian-dollar comparative continuity and matching prior-year statutory figures, not an exchange-rate conversion. This contextual selection is recorded in the evidence log.
  • The FY2026 current financial assets are not labelled unrestricted cash without maturity/restriction detail. The term-deposit cash movement is not treated as mine construction expenditure.
  • Grant timing paraphrases repeat the historical cessation. No duplicate grant income, adjusted earnings or additional cash receipt is invented.
  • FID, conditional credit approvals, construction targets and offtake quantities are not actual mine production or sales.
