(ASX: AUQ) Alara Resources Financial Review - FY2021~25

Alara moved from funding construction in Oman to receiving copper-concentrate revenue. FY2025 operating cash turned positive, but a sizeable accounting loss, ramp-up constraints and a working-capital deficit show why first revenue was not the same as a completed financial turnaround.

Years ended 30 June 2021-2025 · Australian dollars · consolidated group, with owner-attributable loss separately labelled · Editorial review: 2026-09-28 · MII Research

Five years in context

The capital-intensive build phase is most visible in FY2023 development cash and borrowings. The later period brought concentrate revenue from the 51%-owned AHRL operation, which is fully consolidated rather than reported at 51% of each line.

Positive operating cash can coexist with a loss when depreciation, financing costs and other accrual expenses are substantial. It also does not remove the need to manage current liabilities and the timing of provisional concentrate settlements.

Events behind the numbers

FY2021

Engineering and site access

Metallurgical testing and basic engineering were completed, with land-access approvals supporting development. The accommodation-camp work and major orders dated August–September 2021 followed June year-end.

FY2022

Debt-funded construction

Development and exploration payments increased as borrowings funded the mine-build programme. These were construction cash flows, not the cost of a mature producing operation.

FY2023

Peak development spending

Project expenditure and borrowing drawdowns accelerated. The 84.35% construction-progress update was dated October 2023, after June, and is not presented as the balance-date completion level.

FY2024

First concentrate shipments

The FY2024 operational account records commissioning and first concentrate shipment in May 2024. The tailings-filter bottleneck subsequently disrupted the ramp-up.

FY2025

Revenue, bottleneck and post-year repairs

Concentrate revenue was recorded during ramp-up. Replacement filter presses commissioned in August 2025 were a post-year operational improvement; the July placement was also outside June cash.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 01

A cash-flow inflection, not yet a clean earnings turnaround

The FY2025 operating cash inflow marked a change from the preceding outflow years. Investment requirements fell sharply from the construction peak, but the reported loss attributable to shareholders increased. Cash generation and reported profit answer different questions.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 02

The financial footprint of the build phase

FY2023 contained the largest development cash outflow in this five-year series. Borrowing proceeds and minority-owner contributions financed that build; they are not sales. Once operating, project expense moves partly into the income statement and operating cash, so the fall in development payments is not a fall in total activity.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 03

Depreciation and financing separate profit from cash

Depreciation was A$25.396m, exceeding the group’s A$19.027m loss. Finance expense and a doubtful-debt provision also mattered. This is not an EBITDA calculation: omitted expense and income lines prevent a partial bridge from being called a complete underlying result.

Alara shareholders absorbed only the owner-attributable portion of the consolidated loss; non-controlling interests absorbed the remainder. Mixing the owner loss with group cash without labelling would misstate the economics.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 04

Revenue did not remove the working-capital risk

The auditor identified material uncertainty related to going concern. Related-party creditors agreed to defer A$66.526m, with interest waived through June; further waiver discussions were informal. This does not establish that the liabilities disappeared or that future relief was guaranteed.

The bank facility’s OMR amount, its AUD translated facility headline, drawn borrowings and parent guarantees are different measures. The issuer reported no covenant breach during the year, but that is not the same as absence of liquidity risk.

July 2025 placement proceeds were intended partly for the Trafigura facility, with a July repayment disclosed. Neither the later raising nor the repayment is inserted into the June 2025 closing cash balance.

FINANCIAL REVIEW / 05

Concentrate pricing and ramp-up require care

Revenue is initially recognised at 90% of the provisional price under the Trafigura arrangement, with final pricing 30–180 days after delivery. Customer receipts and recognised revenue therefore should not be forced to match shipment-by-shipment in this annual review.

The stored annual narratives disagree on the exact commercial-production commencement date and on shipment-count scope. This review retains the documented FY2024 first shipment and FY2025 revenue, but does not create a continuous production-volume or utilisation series from those inconsistent claims. The August 2025 improvement remains a subsequent event.

Reading the figures

  • Frozen annual extraction only; no new DB, raw report, web financial research or MiniMax. Published primary-author review.
  • Full consolidation is distinct from the 51% ownership share. Owner loss, group loss and total equity retain their own bases.
  • Conflicting exact commencement dates and shipment-count scopes are disclosed rather than silently normalised.
  • A small FY2024 comparative difference is logged; no arithmetic-only gate or arbitrary rejection was used.
