A difficult restart case at Sandstone
Extensive drilling and a completed feasibility study did not establish the standalone restart case sought by management. Exploration remained a major expense.
Middle Island moved from the Sandstone gold project to a Barkly-focused exploration portfolio. The 2022 disposal produced a large one-off profit and an Aurumin investment; subsequent investment losses, exploration spending and asset sales shaped a very different cash and earnings story.
Reading the figures: Units are stated above each table or beside the metric. Brackets denote negative amounts. Supported nil is shown as zero; unlike reporting bases remain separately labelled.
Closing cash, distinct from quoted investments.
One-off disposal gain, not operating sales.
Investment remeasurement, not cash spent.
Ongoing funding need remained.
The Sandstone feasibility study did not justify a stand-alone restart on the stated assumptions. Selling the project in FY2022 brought cash and shares rather than recurring mine earnings, while exploration activity shifted toward Barkly in the Northern Territory.
For this company the important comparisons are the cost of ongoing exploration, the changing investment portfolio and the cash available to fund work. A disposal gain, a fair-value loss and a cash outflow are different measures and should not be read as one operating trend.
Extensive drilling and a completed feasibility study did not establish the standalone restart case sought by management. Exploration remained a major expense.
The sale completed on 20 March 2022. It generated a disposal gain but also left exposure to Aurumin through the consideration shares.
First-pass Crosswinds drilling did not identify economic mineralisation. Aurumin ceased to be an associate and was treated as a financial asset; fair-value losses weighed on earnings.
The acquisition completed after FY2023 balance date using shares, and its tenement acquisition cost appears in the FY2024 balance sheet. It was not a cash purchase of that amount.
Georgina drilling progressed and investment sales replenished cash. The Konstantin acquisition and accompanying placement were announced after year-end and remained subject to approval.
The very high FY2021 exploration charge accompanied Sandstone’s drilling and feasibility work. Later annual losses were lower but still reflected active exploration and corporate costs. Acquisition rights can be capitalised; the policy expenses other exploration as incurred, so the tenement asset is not cumulative exploration spending.
Investment valuation is a second, distinct driver. FY2023’s fair-value loss was materially larger than exploration expense; the following two years reported gains instead. FY2024 also included a separate share-based-payment charge. These accounting movements should not be mistaken for changes in cash generated by a mine.

Expenses are signed. Other income is the statutory aggregate, not a comparable mine-sales revenue series; FY2022 disclosures include limited gold sales, grants and equipment sales.
FY2021 continuing loss is explicitly identified in the FY2022 comparative. FY2022 discontinued profit is shown separately below, not mixed into the loss trend.
FY2025 uses the statutory loss corroborated by the EPS and going-concern records. A conflicting management-summary loss is not substituted.

FY2022 also has separate equity-accounted associate losses and impairment, detailed below; the fair-value row is not total investment expense.

The sale transformed a directly held project into cash and an equity investment. Its disposal gain was substantially larger than the continuing loss, producing a positive combined result. That result cannot be extrapolated as an ongoing earnings rate.
The Aurumin stake then brought its own accounting charges: MDI recognised a share of associate losses and an impairment. The following year’s change from associate to financial asset also changes how the holding affects profit. The former Sandstone rehabilitation provision transferred with the project.

Consideration less net assets and disposal costs produces the Sandstone disposal gain. Half of the consideration was Aurumin shares, not cash.
The combined discontinued result includes Burkina Faso as well as Sandstone. The saved subsidiary subtotals differ from the reported combined amount by A$1; the reported total is retained.
Disposal is a business transaction, not annual gold-sales revenue. The Sandstone rehabilitation obligation passed to Aurumin.

The positive combined result came from discontinued operations, not a profitable ongoing exploration business. The calculated A$4.067028m sum is explicitly the two net-result lines. The tax note instead labels A$4.070554m as profit; that equals the comprehensive total after the A$3,526 translation movement. These differently labelled observations are not silently interchanged.
At FY2022 year-end Aurumin was a 25.14% associate. By FY2023 it was no longer an associate and the holding was measured as a financial asset; those are different accounting bases.

Operating cash flow was negative in every year. FY2022 disposal cash helped build the cash balance without an equity raise, but FY2023 then consumed cash with nil financing. The nil years are substantive parts of the funding history, not missing columns.
FY2025 closing cash increased despite the operating outflow because investment sales and new shares supplied cash. Both the gross sale receipts and the outlays that reduce net investing cash flow are shown below. The sale of an investment replenishes liquidity once; it is not a substitute for recurring revenue.

The balance sheet initially exchanged project assets for cash and an associate holding. Later investment valuation declines reduced the asset base. In FY2023 the Aurumin holding was non-current; by FY2024 the reported financial assets were current. Classification and investment measurement need to be read alongside the totals.
East Tennant was acquired with shares after FY2023 year-end. Its acquisition carrying amount remains separate from exploration written off through profit or loss. The FY2025 auditor describes the Aurumin disposal and the remaining listed-share balance; the latter is not treated as a continuing Aurumin holding.

FY2022 also carried the separate A$4.025m associate investment above. Adding it to current financial assets explains the broader A$4.121903m investment figure in the working-capital discussion; the two are not competing measurements of one asset.
FY2023 current financial assets exclude the separately classified non-current Aurumin holding of A$1.085m. The FY2024 schedule moves investment value into current assets and reports nil non-current financial assets.
Tenement acquisition cost is not annual exploration expense: FY2021 concerns the earlier portfolio; FY2024–FY2025 includes the East Tennant acquisition. Other exploration and evaluation costs are expensed as incurred.

The next-12-month tenement commitments sit alongside, not in place of, ongoing corporate expenditure. At FY2025 year-end the auditor identified material uncertainty about going concern and dependence on additional funding. Available cash should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed multi-year runway.
The proposed Konstantin acquisition involved consideration shares and options, with a separate A$3.4m placement commitment. Both were post-balance-date and subject to shareholder approval. They are not June cash, completed acquisition assets or financing already received in FY2025.
No FY2025 dividend was declared. Potential tax benefits from accumulated losses remain dependent on future taxable income and the relevant recognition conditions; they are not added to available cash.
